  • History

Vijayapuram Social Service Society (VSSS) is the official organ of the Diocese of Vijayapuram for socio-economic and educational development interventions. It was established and registered as S.No.36/61 under Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act of 1955 in the year 1961. The operational area of the Society consists of highlands, undulating midlands and the low lands in the State of Kerala. The organization is working for the integral development of the poor and the marginalized people in the operational area for the last 47 years. The organization offered itself in organizing the rural poor to work for sustainable development of the entire community. The programme was started with the wholehearted support received from MISEREOR Germany

We are currently in the age of “Participation”. For the past few years VSSS has continuously sought and experimented with alternative solutions to the poverty that is endemic in our target population. This search has resulted in periodic emergence of new strategies that have greatly influenced our thinking and practice. The major strategies that predominated and received widespread support were “Community Development”, “Integrated Rural Development” But our search continued for more relevant strategies. The present strategy we follow is “Participation” as a major new force in development thinking. We always promote inclusion of human resources in development efforts. We have also promoted Participation as more linked to tackling the structural causes of people’s poverty rather than as yet another input into development project. People are poor because they are excluded and have little influence upon forces, which affect their livelihoods. Participation therefore, is viewed as a process whereby such people seek to have some influence and to gain access to the resources, which would help them sustain and improve their living standards. This process has helped us to give our attention to those who had never appeared on our files.

As an organization VSSS is now firmly established among the people as a catalyst for change. Its knowledge base, economic resources and personnel resources are deployed in the process of people-centred development.

  • Gender
    Gender development programme

We distinguish the differences between women and men as biological and socially constructed. Gender refers to those differences between women and men that are socially constructed in contrast to biological differences between them. Gendered socialization attributes different roles and responsibilities to women/men and boys/girls. Gender differences have been built up and reinforced by socio-cultural and economic institutions over time perpetuating discriminatory belief systems and attitudes, imbalanced positioning and inequalities among women and men.

Women and men play different roles and have different needs. A gender perspective helps to integrate and consider women’s and men’s diverse roles, responsibilities and opportunities in developmental and political processes. Gender equality implies that women and men have same opportunities to realize their potential and human rights and enjoy equal status. Gender mainstreaming is to initiate and institutionalize processes that will bring about gender equality.

VSSS has prioritized Gender as a cross cutting theme for all interventions. The Society has developed a Gender Policy to be adhered to in future in all its initiatives. Gender mainstreaming is a thrust area to be considered in the organizational culture and programmes. It has to develop as a focus area in capacity building, empowerment. A process has to be initiated for introducing gender audit in all programmes.

    Objectives

    1. To generate Gender Sensitivity among the constituent population of the organization
    2. To evolve a gender perspective plan at the organizational level
    3. To incorporate gender sensitivity among all the stakeholders
    4. To inculcate human values and thereby create a just society

  • Community Health

    My Health Programmes

My health is a Health promotion Programme devised by Vijayapuram Social Service Society with active involvement of people in planning, implementing, managing and evaluating Health Promotion initiatives. The concepts behind the programme are:

Health is a basic right, which all people should be able to enjoy. Involvement in decisions and actions, which affect people’s health builds self-esteem and also encourages a sense of responsibility. Community involvement as a principle is of intrinsic value in the development of communities in a wider sense and should be promoted as the basic approach to health development.

Many health services function on the basis of limited resources. In this respect Community Involvement can be a means of making more resources available to health services by drawing upon local knowledge and resources to complement those provided by the formal health services. Furthermore, community involvement can help to extend the coverage of health services and lower the overall cost of these services. Similarly, it can lead to the greater cost-effectiveness of health services and, in the long term, an adequate return on funds invested in the health sector. Community involvement increases the possibility that health programmes and projects will be appropriate and successful in meeting health needs as defined by local people, as opposed to medical needs as defined by the health service. When health services can be linked to local perceptions of health needs and managed with the support of local people, there will be a better chance that the services’ programmes will be successful.

Community involvement breaks the knot of dependence that characterizes much health development work and, on a wider front, creates awareness in the local people of their potential involvement in development in general. Ultimately it can help create a political consciousness among people that causes them to seek a voice and to be heard in development processes.

Two broad strategies proposed are: (a) Awareness and understanding of health and health problems; and (b) Access to information and knowledge about health service programmes and projects. In the first, the strategy is to build up communities’ awareness and understanding of the issues of health development and the causes of poor health ass the basis for their future active involvement in health development. In the second, the strategy is to facilitate the direct access of communities to information about existing health service programmes and projects as a precondition to their involvement by external health professionals.

    Other Activities include,

    2. Health awareness

    3. Medical Camps

Education

  • Education

Education has been a prime area of intervention for Vijayapuram Social Service Society from the time of its inception. This has been done with the conviction that social actions carried out with welfare schemes alone would not have had sustainable nature unless the educational aspect of the people is not taken care of. Educational support extended through various organizations under the umbrella of VSSS has evolved with the time and reached its current form. Now a day the main thrust is targeted at the members of Vijaya Balavedi. Major activities undertaken in the field of education are Tuition Center, Study Center, Resource Center, Career Planning for teenagers, and educational Seminar for parents and Bala Banking for children of Vijaya Balavedi.

  • Tuition Centre

These are supplementary coaching centers. Children attend these centers according to class in which they learn in their regular schools. Supplementary coaching is given in four subjects namely English, Hindi, Mathematics and Science. Children of Upper Primary and High School attend these centers. Centers at Kunnamthanam, Poovam, Vadavathoor, Vechoochira, Elikulam and Vaisiambhagom have high reputation and popular among the local groups. Altogether 12 centers with 54 teachers are catering the supplementary coaching of 756 children.

  • Study Centre

These centers are meant for children who come from homes are having no or less learning atmosphere. They gather at a place and do self study for one or one and half hours in a day under the guidance of a teacher. Group study or child to child teaching are promoted as there is no scope of formal teaching is possible in a multi level group of children attending the centers. The teacher responsible for the center can occasionally attend the specific problem of a minor group or a child. 146 centers with as many teachers are looking after the self study of 1896 children.

  • Resource Centre

These are advanced learning centers functioning with the help of learning resources and multi media. The resources include both e-resources and hard resources and those which are developed by the children at the centers. A teacher at the center assists the children in carrying out the task assigned to them. These centers are a blessing for children to do their assignments and project works given to them in schools. Altogether 51 centers have been established but at present only 29 centers are functioning with strength of 1275 children.

  • Career Guidance

This is an activity intended to help teenagers end their secondary education with a purpose by setting a goal in life and pursue higher studies according to their aptitude, interest and personality .In each parish the children in high school classes are given orientation in career planning. Eighth standard children are told to wake up and think of the course they intend to pursue after their higher secondary education. The ninth standard children are told to be alert and set the goal in life within a year. And the tenth standard children will have to set the goal in the beginning of the academic year and work for getting admission in the right stream and suitable school so that they become eligible for enrolling in course of their choice. Consistent effort put in by VSSS is showing visible changes among the teenagers of Balavedi. 2400 children are targeted every year.

  • Educational Seminar for parents

It is an awareness programme for parents to conduct themselves for conducive way of helping children in their learning activities and providing assistance in an healthy manner whenever it is necessary. Renowned persons in the field of education conduct these seminars. An average of one hundred parents are expected to attend the seminar in each parish

  • Bala Banking

In the wake of depleting external assistance, Bala Banking is an attempt made by VSSS to continue with the existing programme and nurture self-reliance among the target group. It has been a wont to supply learning materials to children of Balavedi at the time of school reopening. When external help ceased in this regard, the society has initiated to continue with the activity with our own resources. It has been in practice in isolated parishes. Since last year this scheme has been widely implemented throughout the target area and is picking momentum. This scheme tries to inculcate thrift in children which leads to saving mentality. Scheme is of short duration commencing from May and ends in March. Children get their savings plus interest in the month of March which they could use for their needs at the time of school reopening. It is an added help to the parents of the children.
